| The
Tenth International Symposium on High Mountain Remote Sensing
Cartography (HMRSC X) will be held in Kathmandu, Nepal from 8-11
September 2008. The subject of High Mountain Remote Sensing Cartography
is not new to the Himalayan region. In 1992,when the Second Symposium on High Mountain Remote
Sensing Cartography (HMRSC II) was held in Beijing and Lhasa,
the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD)
hosted the oral presentation in Kathmandu. But this will be the
first time HMRSC will be held in the southern part of the Himalayas
in Nepal. ICIMOD with support from the European Space Agency (ESA),
the International Cartographic Association (ICA), the Graz University
of Technology (TU Graz), the University of Graz (UNI Graz), GIS Development and GeoConnexion
is organising this HMRSC X with the objective of promoting and
exchanging experiences on developing and applying remote sensing
techniques on high mountain regions. The symposium will have two
parts: the first consists of oral and panel expositions of scientific
contributions, and the second a field excursion to one mountainous
destination in Nepal.
The HMRSC X will cover diverse topics including
remote sensing techniques, environmental studies, morphological
mapping, monitoring of environmental and global change biodiversity,
geology and mining, glacier and glacial lake investigations, ecotourism,
mountain cartography, amongst others. These fields are direct
applications of remote sensing techniques.
