One of the core functions of ICIMOD is to work as a facilitator and establish itself as a hub for mountain specific information and knowledge using modern geo-ICT tools and techniques. Along with the capacity building and networking activities, implementation of innovative tools and methods to data identification, collection, archiving, accessing, visualization, and analysis of mountain resources is one of the basic requirements. Since its inception, MENRIS is continuing to develop innovative geo-based tools and methods to be used in various GIS/RS application environment. To this effect, MENRIS is working together with regional partners and forging strategic alliances with key international agencies to customize international knowledge in order to adapt to mountain specific situations.
The tools and methods thus developed are based on both soft and hard system approaches that include open source environment, proprietary system and custom made solutions. The available tools and methods ranges in data identification and field based techniques, data and metadata management, data standardisation and exchange protocol, data packaging and dissemination, GIS e-learning environment, participatory GIS, advanced data analysis, spatial visualisation and interactive mapping, online access and so on.
MENRIS is using these tools and methods and applying in a wide variety of applications – natural resource management, environmental monitoring, biodiversity conservation and management, cryosphere mapping and monitoring, disaster risk assessment, land cover and REDD, climate change studies and so. This section of Mountain GeoPortal provides overview of tools and methods with relevant information and also being made available freely to be used by ICIMOD and its partners in mountain development applications.
