Spatial Visualisation on Emerging Environmental Issues of the HKH Region

The impacts of climate change are already becoming evident in the Himalayan region with higher rate of incidence and intensity of natural disasters. This has threatened the lives and livelihoods of the people of this region with access to water, biodiversity, and environmental services becoming ever more critical every day.

To combat these challenges on the emerging environmental issues in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan (HKH) region, MENRIS, ICIMOD provides innovative GIS visualisation solutions where data are transformed into geospatial information through well defined packaging methodology.

The spatial visualisation is one such GIS visualisation solutions that present geographic information most effectively and efficiently for any kind of research and analysis of the problem. Some of the spatial visualisation tools and technology includes 3D visualisation, interactive mapping and web mapping services.

In Mountain GeoPortal, the spatial visualisation products on emerging environmental issues of the region are listed based on categories in the left hand side of the window. These products are developed using various mapping technologies. Some of the technologies adapted by MENRIS are ArcIMS, UMN MapServer, Chameleon, SVG, Macromedia's ShockWave Flash, Google Maps API etc. Plug-in is required in some of the applications. Plug-in information can be found on the individual topic content.
